SEO for AI: when the answer arrives finished, the fight is over being the source
by Daniel Sócrates published
Your customer asks ChatGPT which company to hire. The answer he gets back names three companies.
One question decides the next few years of your traffic: is your name among the three?
What changes when the answer arrives finished
In traditional search, the user gets a list and picks where to click. In a generated answer, the machine picks for him. It reads the sources, assembles a text, and cites whoever served as the base.
The game moves from position to citation. You no longer compete for the top spot on a list. You compete to be the source the machine used. This is called citability.
Citability does not come from a trick. It comes from the same place as always: a clear entity, a direct answer, outside corroboration. The semantic SEO silo builds that base, and this silo shows how the base surfaces inside AI systems, and how to measure it.
How the machine picks who to cite
Start from one fact: the model does not go looking for your site at answer time. It answers from what it consolidated about the subject, then fetches sources to anchor what it was already going to say.
The DNA of ChatGPT shows that in practice. It is a method for mapping what the model already thinks about your market before you try to appear in it. Blood work before the training program.
You can measure it, and almost nobody does
The most repeated line about AI is that there is no way to know. There is, and this silo documents the instruments, each one with the caveats of the party that owns the data.
In Bing. The AI Performance report shows how many times your site appeared as a source inside a generated answer. Microsoft’s three caveats are stated in the article. 1
Inside your Analytics. Traffic arriving from AI assistants is visible and separable. The page devoted to that measurement joins this section soon, and the method already runs in our consulting work.
And in Search Console. Impressions inside Google’s AI experiences count toward the totals, and the audit article shows where to look.
Measuring comes before optimizing. Without a baseline, any improvement is just a salesman’s story.
The names of the discipline, and why we do not fight over acronyms
This field shows up under several names: GEO, generative engine optimization; AEO, answer engine optimization; LLMO, large language model optimization. Each acronym gets its own page in this section, because a different audience searches for each one.
What matters right now is simple. The names vary, the mechanism underneath is one. Build a strong entity, answer the intent, and you show up in AI answers. The acronym of the season does not change that. Scatter your presence without structure, and you lose force in all of them. 2
Where to start
First, the exam. Run the DNA of ChatGPT method and find out what the machines already say about your market, and whether you exist in that conversation.
Second, the baseline. Open Bing’s AI Performance report and save this month’s numbers, caveats included.
Third, the semantic base. If the exam shows you do not exist for the machines, the work belongs to the semantic silo, not to some AI-specific trick.
And when the exam calls for method, our consulting work starts right there.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any guarantee of appearing in ChatGPT?
No, and be suspicious of anyone who promises one. What exists is a method for raising the odds of citation and an instrument for measuring the result.
Is SEO for AI different from SEO?
Same foundation, with a new layer of measurement and format. Sites that already have a strong entity and direct answers usually find most of the work done.
Which AI matters most?
The one your customer uses. Measurement answers that better than opinion: assistant traffic in your Analytics shows where your real demand comes from.

- Microsoft, Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance report, in public preview since February 10, 2026. The definitions and the three official caveats, including the one stating that the metric indicates neither ranking nor authority, are quoted verbatim in this section’s article on the report.
- Daniel Sócrates, “AI Search Optimization”, 2026. The formulation “build a strong entity and you show up more; scatter your presence without structure and you lose force” is a principle of the SEO Genome method.
