SEO for Accounting Firms: What Google and Professional Rules Ask of Your Site
by Daniel Sócrates published
On August 19, 2026, Brazil’s federal tax agency, the Receita Federal, posted a notice for small business owners. It was about Simples Nacional, the country’s simplified tax regime for small companies. The request to join would no longer happen in January. To take effect in 2027, it had to be filed between September 1 and 30, 2026. 1
That day, every page teaching owners to apply in January started teaching it wrong. Nobody touched a comma in those pages. The rule changed underneath them.
On September 14, 2026, I opened the top eight organic results for “seo para contabilidade” (SEO for accounting). I ran the search on Google in Brazil, where we are based. 2 Six teach similar lists, made of items like keywords, a blog, a fast site, and a Google profile. The other two are agency sales pages. Two ask for articles signed by an accountant registered with the CRC, the regional accounting council. One asks for an update date. 2
None of the eight names the advertising rule of Brazil’s Federal Accounting Council. None warns that a firm working only online is left out of Google Business Profile. 2
This piece covers what comes before the list. Who looks for an accountant, and in what words. Why money topics call for more trust and go stale fast. What professional ethics rules say about advertising. And what changes between a walk-in office and an accountant who serves the whole country online. If your firm is just starting out, the basics for any small business are in SEO for small businesses.
Who looks for an accountant, and in what words
Picture the firm’s phone on a Monday morning. Nobody calls to say they want to hire accounting services. Someone calls who is about to open a company and has no idea where to start. A hairdresser calls because her revenue just passed the ceiling of her micro-business status. A client of another firm calls, tired of waiting for answers.
Every call arrives with a problem that has its own name. The Google search arrives with the same problem, in the same words. The reason someone types is what they want solved. This is called search intent.
The numbers back up the scene, and they come from Brazil. In Semrush’s Brazil database, on September 14, 2026, “abrir cnpj” (open a company registration) had 18,100 searches a month. “Desenquadramento mei” (leaving MEI, Brazil’s individual micro-entrepreneur status) had 6,600. “Quanto custa um contador” (how much an accountant costs) had 480, and “trocar de contador” (switch accountants) had 210. 3 The Portuguese phrase behind this page, “seo para contabilidade,” had 20. 3 It is the phrase of people who sell services to accounting firms.
The profession’s own word can mislead too. In Portuguese, the word for accountant, “contador,” also means counter. On Google Trends, searches for “contador” in Brazil mix the professional with tools that count words and characters. Among the rising topics there is even a 2025 film, The Accountant 2, listed as O Contador 2. 4
In the book, I describe an accounting firm’s page about starting a business. It runs four thousand words. No paragraph answers, from start to finish, how long it takes to open a company today. 5 It is an illustrative scene, and it shows the gap. The firm wrote about the subject. The person searching wanted the answer.
Demand follows a calendar
Trends measures relative interest, on a scale from 0 to 100, without showing the number of searches. 4 It is useful for seeing when a question comes up.
Brazil’s calendar is the example here, because that is where I measured. The search “contador imposto de renda” (income tax accountant) stayed between 0 and 5 points from June 2025 to February 2026. It rose to 21 in the week of March 22, 2026, and to 20 in the week of May 24. 4 The deadline for Brazil’s 2026 income tax return was May 29. 6
“Abrir cnpj” and “desenquadramento mei” draw a different shape. Both hit their highest value of the year in January, in 2025 and again in 2026. 4 Until 2026, January was also the month to apply for Simples. 1 I don’t know how much of the peak came from that. In 2027, it is worth looking at the curve again before building the content calendar.
The practical consequence fits in one sentence. The page that answers the season’s question needs a review before the peak. Your own market has its own calendar, and the same check works there.
Money calls for more trust
At a Sunday barbecue, your brother-in-law tells everyone how he suffered through his tax return. Everyone laughs, and nobody takes notes. On Monday, whoever has to file the return calls an accountant.
The manual Google writes for its search quality raters makes the same split. In a table on sensitive topics, it puts two pieces of content side by side. On one side, a humorous video from a non-expert about the frustration of doing taxes. On the other, instructions on how to fill out tax forms. 7 The first counts as life experience. The second is best left to experts. 7
Google’s public documentation says why this matters. Its systems give even more weight to content with strong E-E-A-T on certain topics. These are topics that could significantly impact people’s health, financial stability, or safety. 8 This is called YMYL. The acronym stands for Your Money or Your Life, and the name is Google’s own. 8
E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. The same page says trust is the most important of the four. 8 It also says E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor. 8
The rater guidelines define the money topic. It covers topics that could damage a person’s ability to support themselves and their families. 7 The guidelines list tax preparation among the topics that require expertise. They also name government tax websites as an authoritative source for tax forms. 7
Raters do not move anyone’s ranking. Google uses their ratings to learn whether its systems are working. 8 Reading the manual is useful for something else: learning what Google considers good on a money topic.
The documentation for site owners asks three questions about authorship. Is it self-evident to visitors who wrote the content? Does the page carry a byline where one is expected? Does the byline lead to more information about the author? 8 At an accounting firm, the answer includes a license number, and the next section gets there.
The same bar, applied to a medical practice, is in the piece on SEO for doctors.
The rule changes, and the page falls behind
Picture the fire extinguisher at the office. It has a tag with the date of its last inspection and the name of the inspector. An extinguisher without a tag might still work. Nobody would bet on it.
On a page, the tag plays the same role. This is called a review date.
Go back to the notice from Brazil’s tax agency in August. 1 The rater guidelines have a section on searches that call for current information. The query [tax forms] is among the examples. 7 For that kind of search, a page with outdated information counts as stale and gets a low Needs Met rating. 7
The same manual separates two situations. An old page can still earn a high Page Quality rating. Unmaintained, inaccurate content is a reason for a low Page Quality rating. 7
In the book, I look at the problem from the side of AI answers. An excellent article from 2021, on a subject whose rule changed in 2025, is a weak candidate in any system that looks at dates. 5 The text is still good. The information inside it got old.
Google’s documentation on dates explains how to show the tag. The date should be visible and featured prominently, with text like “Publish” or “Last updated.” 9 The visible date must match the date in the structured data. 9
The page on helpful content leaves a warning for anyone thinking of a shortcut. It asks whether you change a page’s date to make it seem fresh without substantially changing the content. 8 A date changed without a review is a fake extinguisher tag.
That is why the review date travels with the name of the person who did the review. At an accounting firm, that name comes with a license number from the body that regulates the profession.
What professional ethics rules say about advertising
First, a boundary. This piece is not legal or accounting advice. I read professional rules the way someone who builds pages reads them. How they apply to your case is a question for whoever regulates your practice, or for a lawyer.
The rules on how accountants may advertise depend on where you practice. Check the ones that apply to you before you publish anything. I will use the rule from Brazil, where we are based, as the example. I read it in full, and the mechanism it reveals is what matters here.
In Brazil, the rule in force is NBC PG 01, the Code of Professional Ethics for Accountants. It comes from the Federal Accounting Council, the CFC. It is dated February 7, 2019, and ran in the country’s Official Gazette on February 14. It took effect on June 1, 2019. 10 On September 14, 2026, the CFC’s standards system showed it in force and unamended. 10 It also applies to accounting technicians. 10
Five points in the rule bear directly on a firm’s website.
- Tone. Advertising, in any medium, must lead with its technical and scientific nature. Treating the profession as plain commerce is banned. It must be informative, moderate, and discreet. 10
- The identification line. The accountant states the registration number, name, and professional category after the signature. The list covers work, proposals, contracts, and every single advertisement. 10
- The signed article. An accountant may publish technical work that is signed and under their responsibility. They may list titles, specializations, services, and past work. 10
- The client’s name. A client list only goes up with the clients’ permission. Citing work that identifies a client without permission breaches professional confidentiality. 10
- Superlatives. The rule bans disproportionate claims about services, qualifications, or experience. It also bans disparaging comparisons with other people’s work. 10 And it requires the professional to keep the data that backs up the advertising message. 10
Now look at that list through the rater’s eyes. The rule wants signed technical articles, with name, category, and registration. Google asks who wrote the page and whether the byline leads to the author. 8 In my reading, the ethics code already provides the byline a money page needs. What is missing is the same line on every article, with the review date next to it.
Wherever you practice, the question is the same. Which body licensed you, and does it keep a record anyone can check?
In Brazil, the registration is public. The CFC’s national lookup searches for professionals and accounting firms. Its fields are registration type, CRC, registration number, name, individual or company tax ID, and status. 11 I found no Google document saying Google checks this registry. Its value sits on the client’s side: anyone can check it in a minute.
That line has a natural home. It is an official page for the firm, and one for each accountant who signs, at addresses that never change. The rules for that page are in the piece on the entity home.
A walk-in office, or an online accountant for the whole country
In Semrush’s Brazil database, on September 14, 2026, “contador online” (online accountant) and “contabilidade online” (online accounting) had 8,100 searches a month each. “Contabilidade perto de mim” (accounting near me) had 2,400. 3 Both kinds of demand exist. They call for different kinds of presence on Google.
Google Business Profile has an entry rule. To qualify, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. 12 The same page lists who is not eligible, and online-only businesses are on the list. 12
If clients come to your office, you list the address. 13 A virtual office, a rented mailing address where you don’t operate, isn’t eligible. 13 An office in a co-working space only qualifies with clear signage, customers received on site, and staff there during business hours. 13
There is a third way to serve clients, and Google itself uses a plumber as the example. The plumber works in customers’ homes and runs the business from home. That home address comes off the profile. 13 This is called a service-area business. It is the accountant who goes to the client.
That kind of profile sets a service area. 13 It can have up to 20 service areas. 14 The overall boundaries shouldn’t reach farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based. 14 The guidelines allow a larger area for some businesses, when appropriate. 13
Put the three rules together. A firm that serves the whole country without receiving anyone has no profile. 12 In my reading, its presence on Google lives on the site, in its professional registration, and in what other sources say about it. That is why the identity work from the previous section weighs more for that firm than for a walk-in office.
A walk-in office also competes on the map. The factors that decide the order there are laid out in the local SEO section. A firm that grew into several offices has rules of its own. Google asks for consistent names and categories across all locations, and one profile per location. 13 How to split who handles each part is in SEO for companies.
The firm sheet
Take a sheet of paper and set aside an afternoon. The exercise starts in a place you do not control.
- Open the public license lookup where you practice. In Brazil, that is the CFC’s national lookup. Search for the firm and for each accountant who signs content on the site. Copy what the record shows, without fixing anything. 11
- Open the homepage and each author’s page. Check that the line with name, professional category, and registration number matches the record. 10
- List the pages that depend on a rule or a deadline: filing dates, thresholds, tax regimes, tax reform. Next to each one, write the date of the last review and who did it. Circle every page that still teaches an old deadline, like the Brazilian pages still sending owners to apply for Simples in January. 1
- Answer honestly whether the firm receives clients during its stated hours. The answer decides between an address, a service area, or no profile at all. 12 13
- Take the page that brings in the most clients and read only its headings, in order. In the book, the weak version goes like this: starting a business, about us, why choose us, FAQ, contact us. The strong version swaps those signs for questions: how much it costs, how long it takes, which tax regime to choose. 5
Every circle on the sheet is work that comes before any new article. The rest of the site, from indexing to speed, follows the order of the technical SEO section.
The next rule change
From now on, when the tax agency changes a deadline, you will open the sheet before posting the news. First the pages that teach the old deadline. Then the review date and the name of the reviewer. Only then the news.
Whoever does this every time has a site that keeps up with the rule on the day it changes.
Start today with two tabs open: the public license lookup and your site’s homepage.
Frequently asked questions
Can an accounting firm that works only online have a Google Business Profile?
Under Google’s policy, no. To qualify, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours, and online-only businesses are not eligible. 12 A virtual office is left out too. 13
Can an accountant list service prices on the website?
That depends on the rules where you practice. In Brazil, NBC PG 01 does not address prices in advertising in those words. It bans treating the profession as plain commerce and asks for informative, moderate, and discreet advertising. 10 In the rule, the fee for each service appears inside the written proposal. 10 This is the reading of someone who writes pages, and it is not legal or accounting advice. Your own regulator answers questions about your case.
Can I name clients and cases on the firm’s site?
Check your own rules first. In Brazil, the code allows listing past work and a client list, the list only with the clients’ permission. A reference that identifies a client without permission is banned. 10
Does updating an article’s date help it show up on Google?
The date has to reflect a real review. On its page about helpful content, Google asks whether you change dates to make pages seem fresh without substantially changing the content. 8 Its documentation on dates asks for a visible date that matches the one in the structured data. 9
Who should sign the articles on the firm’s blog?
Whoever is responsible for the technical content. In Brazil, the ethics code allows accountants to publish signed technical work under their responsibility, with name, category, and registration. 10 Google asks whether the byline leads to more information about the author. 8
