Complaining About the Photo Does Not Change the Photo
by Daniel Sócrates published
Search the name of an established company and look at the box on the right, with the logo, the description, the founding date, and the website.
That box is the knowledge panel. And the most expensive mistake in the market is treating it as a form that somebody fills in.
Where the panel comes from
The panel is the public display of a record in the Google catalog of entities. It shows up when the machine has enough confidence that it knows who you are, with attributes confirmed by sources it accepts. 1
Think of a museum display case. What sits on show is what the collection has catalogued. Nobody changes the case by painting the glass: you change the catalog, and the case follows. This is called a catalog display.
The practical consequence: the panel is a result, and not a project. The project is the catalog, and the catalog gets built with an entity home and corroboration.
The mistake of fixing the display
A path exists for reporting an error in a panel, and it has existed for years. Complaining there does not change the catalog the information came from. The wrong description comes back, because the source keeps saying what it said. Fixing the display without fixing the origin is mopping the floor with the tap still running. 2
The procedure that works runs against instinct. It has four steps: 2
One. List the sources the search engine cross-checks in your sector: directories, associations, professional boards, local press, public databases.
Two. For each wrong field in the panel, find out which source published that field.
Three. Fix the most authoritative source first, and only then the others.
Four. Wait. A correction takes weeks to reach everywhere, and you control nobody’s clock.
And watch out for active noise. The listing with your old address wears the face of an official source, and it sends people to a room you moved out of. Showing up wrong costs more than not showing up. 3
What nobody can promise, and why
A panel guaranteed in 90 days does not exist. Whoever promises it is promising a decision that belongs to the machine, about a catalog nobody outside controls.
What you work on are the conditions: an official home live, consistent facts everywhere, independent sources confirming them. With the conditions in place, the panel usually arrives. With no deadline, and no guarantee, and any serious proposal says so on its first page.
That is how the consulting practice treats the subject, and it is written on the service page, in the section on what we do not promise.
Frequently asked questions
My company has no panel. Is that serious?
It is information, and not a sentence. It means the catalog does not have enough confidence yet. The work of the whole silo is building that confidence in the right order.
Can I claim the panel once it appears?
You can and you should. Claiming gives you access to display adjustments. It does not replace the source work, for the reason of the whole chapter: the case follows the catalog. 2
Do panels for a person and for a company work the same way?
The mechanism is the same, the sources change. A person depends more on profiles and published work; a company, on registries and coverage. Both depend on a stable official home.
How long does it take?
It depends on where the catalog starts, and nobody measures the catalog from outside. The honest answer is: conditions first, measurement in a series, and zero promises of a date.
