Wikidata: Creating the Item Too Early Burns Your Second Chance
by Daniel Sócrates published
Wikidata is a public, structured database of entities, maintained by a community, and machines query it. Holding an item there means holding a record in one of the registries the systems read.
That is why everyone wants the item. And that is exactly why creating it the wrong way costs so much.
The detail that changes everything: deletion is public
An item proposed with no backing can be deleted by the community, and the deletion discussion stays in the history, public and dated. 1
Think of a denied credit application that stays on your file. The second review starts by reading the first refusal. An item recreated after a deletion is born under suspicion, because the earlier deletion is one click away. This is called burning your second try . It is the reason the house rule is blocking: with no sufficient independent source, the item is not proposed. 1
What counts as notability
The logic of community databases is the same corroboration as the rest of the method. The entity has to be described by serious, independent, verifiable sources that exist outside of it.
And here the source yardstick from the book does the work. 2
It counts: press coverage with original reporting, a record in an official database, a third-party publication with editorial judgment.
It does not count: your own site, a syndicated press release, a paid directory, a profile you filled in yourself. All of that is your own voice, and notability is measured by the voice of others.
Before any proposal, we ask one operating question. Remove everything the company published about itself, and what is left written by third parties? If the answer is almost nothing, the time has not come. 3
The right order, and it has three steps
First, the house. The entity home live, with the canonical facts the item will reference.
Second, the corroboration. Two or three real, independent sources confirming those facts. It is the slow step, and it is what holds the item up against a deletion discussion.
Third, the item. It is born citing the sources, with the attributes they confirm, and nothing beyond that. A lean, backed item ages better than a fat, fragile one.
Building in the reverse order is putting up the roof first. And the rain, here, is public.
What we do and what we do not do
The notability assessment is part of the consulting practice: the source yardstick applied to your record, with an honest verdict, including the “not yet”. What the house does not do is propose an item with no backing to look busy. The cost of a public deletion belongs to the client, and it outlasts the contract. 1
Frequently asked questions
Is Wikidata the same thing as Wikipedia?
They are sibling projects with different bars. Wikidata holds structured data and has its own criteria; Wikipedia requires significant coverage, and its bar is higher. The order of house, corroboration, and then item holds for both.
Can I create the item for my own company?
Technically the database is open. In practice, a self-promotional item with no sources is the classic candidate for deletion. What protects an item is not who created it, it is what holds it up.
I already have the item and it is wrong. Now what?
Fix it with a source, never by force. An edit with no reference on a watched item gets reverted, and the dispute stays in the history. The road is the same as the knowledge panel one: the source first, the display after.
Does a Wikidata item guarantee a knowledge panel?
No. It is one of the registries the machine reads, and it helps the confidence of the catalog. Guarantee is a word that does not exist in this silo.
Notes and sources
- Operating rule of the SEO Genome entity ops squad, recorded in the squad manual: item proposals go through a prior classification of sources, and a source that is not independent does not sustain a proposal, with no exceptions. The declared reason is the cost of a public deletion for the second attempt.
- Daniel Sócrates, “AI Search Optimization” (“SEO de Entidade”, Portuguese edition), 2026, chapter 7: the taxonomy of source strength, from official documentation to self-published material, applied here to the notability criterion.
- Operating test of the squad, derived from the yardstick of chapter 7: the hypothetical removal of everything self-published as a measure of the backing that remains.
