Your Competitor Is Farther Away and Still Ranks Above You. A Patent Explains Why

A customer opens Maps standing right in front of your store, searches for what you sell, and the competitor from the next neighborhood shows up first.

The question that follows is always the same. If I am closer, why does he rank above me?

The answer sits in one word that Google uses and never explains.

The three factors, and Google declares all three

The official Google Business Profile help says what decides the order in the local pack. Three things.

Relevance, and the definition is literal: “Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for”. 1

Distance: “Distance refers to how far each business is from the customer who’s searching”. 2

Prominence: “Prominence means how well-known a business is. Prominent places are more likely to show up in search results”. 3

Distance you cannot change, short of changing your address. Relevance you fix in an afternoon, by sorting out category and description. Prominence is the only one of the three that gets built, and it is the one that settles the fight between similar businesses.

Before we go on, one sentence has to appear here, and it is literal too: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google”. 4 Anyone selling you the top spot on Maps for a monthly fee is selling something that does not exist.

What prominence actually measures

Google uses the word and never opens up what it calculates. A patent from the company itself opens it.

The title is Scoring local search results based on location prominence, number US 8,046,371 B2, assignee Google LLC. Priority in 2005, granted in 2011. 5

It lists the scoring factors, and I translate each one into practice: 6

The specification declares that those factors “may be combined and/or weighted in any manner”. 6

One caveat has to travel with all of that, and it is a big one. The patent has priority in 2005 and a grant in 2011. A patent documents a described mechanism, and it does not prove what runs today. It serves to understand the logic, and never to state the current formula. 5

Where this meets the rest of the method

Read the list again and notice what it asks for. An authoritative document. Pages that refer to the business. Pages that mention the business.

None of that lives inside your profile. All of it lives outside.

Think of a new professional in a small town. He may run the best practice on the street. The people who make his name travel are the others: the pharmacy on the corner, the local paper, the neighborhood group. This is called corroboration.

It is the same logic that governs any digital entity, applied to a physical address. Anyone treating the Maps profile as a form to fill out is working on the part that weighs least.

Where AI helps, and where it does not

Corroboration work is dull, repetitive, and heavy on volume. That is exactly the shape of task where AI pays off.

Map the mentions. Gather everything you found about the business and paste it into a model. Ask for the list of places where the name appears, with the address and the phone that show up in each one.

Find the divergence. A name spelled two ways, an old phone number in three directories, an address with no suite number. That list of inconsistencies is the work of the week.

Generate the questions. From the real reviews you pasted, the model returns what customers ask before they buy. That becomes content, and content becomes mention.

Now what it does not do, and this is the most requested part. The model has no access to your Maps or to your profile. It does not know your rank, it does not see your reviews, and it does not measure your prominence. Everything it processes is what you pasted in there.

A language model that answers “your rank improved” is making it up. No measurement exists without pasted data.

What to do this week

Check the spelling of the name everywhere it appears. One spelling, always the same.

List who already talks about your business. A supplier, an association, a neighborhood paper, a client with a website. That list is usually longer than the owner imagines.

Pick three places where you should be mentioned and are not. That is the plan.

And stop poking at the profile every day. It is the record, and not the work.
